Entrevista retirada da Fanzine Utopia Platafórmica, Volume I. Os nacionais Grievance, uma força nunca adormecida da cena nacional, em 5 questões. Que o futuro nos permita receber, mais uma vez, Koraxid.

São já 23 anos de Black Metal. Koraxid, o único membro original ainda presente, mantém viva a chama que o levou a criar Grievance em 1997, nas Caldas da Rainha, com Azarath. 2019 trouxe-nos "Em Lucefécit", o 3.º álbum de originais, uma clara homenagem ao Black Metal dos 90 e aos princípios pelos quais o mesmo se "desenhava". Que papel desempenha o Black Metal na tua vivência diária? Como encaixa, na tua perspectiva de ver o Mundo e a Vida em geral?

Sem dúvida tem e terá sempre um papel fulcral, como expressão artística e criativa. É um pouco difícil enquadrar esta visão na minha vida diária pois eu tento separar as coisas, tendo em conta que tenho uma vida pessoal que acarreta muitas responsabilidades a afazeres. Num sentido mais abrangente e a nível filosófico é algo que está completamente embebido no meu ADN. Ao fim ao cabo cresci a ouvir e tocar Black Metal, entre outros estilos de música extrema. Nem imaginaria a minha vida vivida de outra forma. Acima de tudo para mim ouvir e tocar Black Metal é uma forma de invocação energética em que todo o poder da minha alma se liberta para me impulsionar de todas as formas a lidar com os desafios que enfrento no quotidiano e a longo prazo, saindo vencedor. É uma catarse que ajuda a eliminar as frustrações e a renovar as forças para as batalhas que se seguem.

As premissas pelas quais se "guiavam" aqueles que deram origem ao género – 1.ª ou 2.ª vaga, como preferires – ainda persistem hoje, naqueles que criam?

Acredito que sim, e há vários exemplos disso tanto em Portugal como no resto do mundo. Este estilo de música nasceu da rebeldia artística dos seus fundadores, que quebraram sistematicamente todas as convenções e regras nos seus primeiros lançamentos. Considero que falta isso em muitas bandas, mas também há bons exemplos de álbuns e bandas actuais que conseguem inovar e viver todo esse espírito que fundou o género ainda hoje.

Que peso tem a vertente mística do Black Metal no momento de criação? Há essa conexão com a linha espiritual?

Tem sempre de haver uma vertente mística, é parte integrante do género desde a sua concepção. Seja paganismo, niilismo, satanismo, ocultismo ou outra qualquer, nem que seja algo espiritual sem descrição ou nome, algo profundo que vem da alma. Para criar bom Black Metal tem de haver algo mais que simplesmente fazer riffs e batidas, tem de haver uma aura especial, intimismo. É difícil explicar, mas penso que quem ler esta resposta entende o que quero dizer.

Como vês o panorama Black Metal actual? És da opinião que o género não é, hoje, mais do que um género musical sem essência alguma ou, pelo contrário, vê-lo como uma realidade fiel a princípios?

Há um pouco de tudo hoje em dia, desde meados da década de 90 perdeu-se o sentido de “perigo” que tanto marcou o estilo, passando este para um patamar mais mainstream com bandas como Cradle of Filth e Dimmu Borgir, embora há sempre um segmento mais oculto que mantém acesa a chama inicial do estilo. A essência continua lá, se se procurarem as bandas e lançamentos certos. Na minha opinião hoje em dia há acesso a tantos lançamentos e bandas que se torna uma tarefa às vezes impossível separar o “trigo do joio” caso se procurem lançamentos mais interessantes. Variedade, essa, não falta, agora qualidade, essa é discutível e muito rara nos dias que correm, na minha opinião.

Que te motiva, hoje, a fazer Black Metal?

Necessidade, pois é o principal alimento da minha alma, e paixão avassaladora pelo estilo e por toda a mística que o rodeia. Como disse acima, sem Black Metal eu não seria eu. Faz parte do meu ADN, e se não desisti ao fim de quase 25 anos também não desisto mais. Enquanto tiver forças para viver caminharei lado a lado com esta paixão.

It's been 23 years of Black Metal. Koraxid, the only original member still present, keeps alive the flame that led him to create Grievance in 1997, in Caldas da Rainha, with Azarath. 2019 brought us "Em Lucefécit", the 3rd album of originals, a clear homage to the Black Metal of the 90s and the principles by which it "drew". What role does Black Metal play in your daily experience? How does it fit, in your perspective of seeing the World and Life in general?

Undoubtedly it has and will always have a central role, as an artistic and creative expression. It is a little difficult to fit this vision in my daily life because I try to separate things, taking into account that I have a personal life that entails many responsibilities to do. In a broader sense and at a philosophical level it is something that is completely embedded in my DNA. In the end I grew up listening and playing Black Metal, among other styles of extreme music. I wouldn't even imagine my life lived any other way. Above all, for me to listen and play Black Metal is a form of energetic invocation in which all the power of my soul is freed to propel me in all ways to deal with the challenges I face in the daily and long term, winning. It is a catharsis that helps to eliminate frustrations and renew strength for the battles that follow.

The premises by which those who gave rise to the genre were "guided" - 1st or 2nd wave, as you prefer - still persist today, in those who create?

I believe so, and there are several examples of this both in Portugal and in the rest of the world. This style of music was born from the artistic rebellion of its founders, who systematically broke all conventions and rules in their first releases. I think that is missing in many bands, but there are also good examples of current albums and bands that manage to innovate and live all that spirit that founded the genre even today.

What weight does the mystical aspect of Black Metal have at the time of creation? Is there a connection with the spiritual line?

I think there must always be a mystical aspect, it is an integral part of the genre from its conception. Be it paganism, nihilism, Satanism, occultism or whatever, even if it is something spiritual without description or name, something profound that comes from the soul. To create good Black Metal there has to be something more than just making riffs and beats, there has to be a special, intimate aura. It is difficult to explain, but I think whoever reads this answer understands what I mean.

How do you see the current Black Metal panorama? Are you of the opinion that the genre is, today, more than a musical genre without any essence or, on the contrary, see it as a reality true to principles?

There is a little bit of everything today, since the mid-90s the sense of “danger” that has so marked the style has been lost, moving to a more main-stream level with bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, although there is always a more hidden segment that keeps the style's initial flame burning. The essence is still there, if you look for the right bands and releases. In my opinion nowadays there is access to so many releases and bands that it is sometimes an impossible task to separate the “wheat from the chaff” if looking for more interesting releases. Variety, that, there is no lack, now quality, that is debatable and very rare these days, in my opinion.

What motivates you, today, to make Black Metal?

Necessity, because it is the main food of my soul, and an overwhelming passion for style and for all the mystics that surround it. As I said above, without Black Metal I would not be me. It is part of my DNA, and if I didn't give up after almost 25 years, I won't give up anymore. As long as I have the strength to live, I will walk side by side with this passion.
