Pyra -
“Pyra” (Immortal Frost Productions, 2022)

Music and the cerebral part of the human existence; when
melodies expand beyond immediate absorption. Regardless of the opinion that
outsiders may have regarding Heavy Metal, the truth is that this genre
continues to be one of the most complex in its structure. It may not “provide”
the smooth radio tunes that many seek... but who gives a fuck? The truth is
that the process of discovery and exploration that some musicians decide to
take as their source of energy, so to speak, sometimes leads them to singular
moments. In the path of sounds with “a hint of something more than just what
initially sounds to us”, we come across the Italian Black Death Metal project
called Pyra. Created in 2020 by L., this year they edit their first work in the
form of an EP with 5 tracks that oscillate between a Black and Death, both
furious, interspersing explosive moments with more progressive melodies
(without ever falling into doldrums that is Prog... sorry, fans), more
soothing, almost.

Undeniably, the base turns out to be Death Metal,
which somehow keeps me from being able to absorb the entirety of what is
presented to us, but still there are points to retain. The vocals are also more
Death Metal than anything else. Aggressive, powerful, truly present and
striking. Overall, this release is aimed at a Death Metal fan audience, and
will appeal to people who are divided between both sub-genres. “Barren Earth
Dug”, for example, presents a melodic line, tenuous, near the end of the song,
immensely pleasant and that, in parallel with the devastation provided by the
other instruments, gives rise to a very well structured moment. “In a Thousand
Different Voices” shows us that L. has a sensibility that sometimes shows
itself more, it presents itself alive.
At certain moments, we feel the soft lull of the
guitar, which drags us into yet another whirlwind of sonic violence. We walked from
peak to peak, in a way, until we were mercilessly rammed off the pedestal.
These tracks grow. If at first I felt that I would hardly find points of
contact, I slowly began to realize that underneath all the violence there was
another violence: more balanced, more melodic, more pleasant, so to speak. When
madness is controlled, the crescendo reveals the true capabilities of its
creator. Give it a go.
