"Malefic Necropolis" – Between 90s Black Metal and Contemporary Precision
London black metal band Sidious return with "Malefic Necropolis" (2026) via Immortal Frost Productions: a fierce, melodic, and dynamic black metal release.
London-based black metal band Sidious return in 2026 with "Malefic Necropolis", their first full-length release under Immortal Frost Productions. Formerly known as Seed of Detest, the band have refined their vision into a focused and aggressive black metal statement, rooted in the genre’s 1990s foundations while embracing a modern, melodic sensibility.
Atropos was responsible for cutting the thread of life to determine the moment of death. As the sister to Clotho (who spun the thread) and Lachesis (who measured it), Atropos represented the inescapable, final nature of fate. And we start this album with the “Shears of Atropos”, a fine way to kick it off indeed. Pungent and visceral, yet melodic. But a very tasteful melodic, d’you know what I mean? No bollocks, pure craftsmanship. It sounds 90ies Black Metal, however it also sounds contemporary Black Metal. There are no gimmicks, no modernity or “outside the genre” bits and pieces. This is aggressive Black Metal with a melodic sensitivity, and it works perfectly for me.
Second track, “Rotborn Terror”, has this almost Thrashy scent, more in-your-face attitude and soul, right? It slaps you and brutally punishes you! Wait… not Black Thrash, but Black with a Thrash soul. Quite different.
“Cosmossuary” is, yet again, a perfect description of the band’s overall sound. it has the melodic moments, the aggressiveness, the more “modern” details – almost Satyricon alike – and maintains its powerful musical expressiveness. Slightly different from previous tunes, “Cosmossuary” does not hold back, and it goes for the jugular, no question asked. Sidious’ sound is aggressive, yet it shows versatility and dynamics. Take, for example, the track “Vortex of Boundless Unlight”. No contemplation or holding back. And this is, in a way, the album’s structure. A well-balanced album.
I am definitely not going to do a track-by-track, I simply mentioned a few good examples of how Sidious presents their music, their art, their Black Metal. Again, this is a very dynamic release, very fluid, and I find that very important. I am all up for the classics, and I love them for what they are and what they gave me as I was growing up on the genre, and I still find them to be perfect visions of what the genre is, however, I also see these more contemporary “incarnations” of the genre as immensely valid and worth listening to. Sidious, for example, has this aroma in their music, a certain class. “Crows Atop the Gallows” is another example of how the band’s sound is not committed to one single form, but to many, and all these forms are revealing of these mates’ quality.
Sidious’ “Malefic Necropolis” deserves your time and attention. Please
press PLAY and enjoy.
