Dystopia – “De verboden diepte II: De weg van de meeste weerstand” (Immortal Frost Productions, 2026)
Black Metal, from an artistic standpoint, has evolved so much, and on so many levels, that one is left in constant awe at each new release. And with this I do not want to say that I enjoy every album that is released on a daily basis! What I truly mean, is that the genre has been trough so many changes and whatnot and yet is does not cease to amaze us.
Wait! It does not mean that, for example, a band like Dystopia, is releasing music that takes Black Metal to a whole new level; it means that there are still musicians that are masters at their craft. And period. “De verboden diepte II: De weg van de meeste weerstand” is the band’s 5th full-length, and the first one I contact with, and I was not expecting this. That the Dutch are all just a wee insane when it comes to Black Metal, I dare say most of us know – maybe not most of, but plenty – and Dystopia is no exception.
2-tracks, just that, just 2-tracks that stretch and stretch, pulling you in, and immediately spiting you out. Never over-doing it, the band takes on the premises of Black Metal – some of them – and crafts from there. Again, I was not acquainted with the band, so I might be misunderstanding the essence of the music, however, their approach is truly cool and dynamic and fluid and… inventive, nonetheless.
Although the 2-tracks are quite long, it is very – and I truly mean very – easy to feel pulled into, absorbed, part of, mesmerized, by how each one of them develops into 2 beautiful specimens of Progressive and Extreme Metal. Yes, I threw the Progressive into the equation, and I am most certainly not completely correct. Even so, I feel the band delivers epic and very well constructed structures, with a certain level of complexity. All in all… epic!
