“Procreation of the Unaltered Evil”
(Reissue - WolfKult
Religion, 2026)
Varathon, a name that deserves the most utter respect, and that will forever echo in the pantheon of Black Metal’s most influential acts in the history of the genre. Very few bands can be considering ground-breaking, quintessential to a movement, a scene, a sound. the Greek sound is a very particular one, a sound that has a “special aroma”, perfection in its notes and chords! Gods.
It all started out in the late 80ies, and here we are, in 2026, and still enjoying their music, still contemplating their contribution to the genre. Nonetheless, instead of diving into a new release, we went along with WolfKult, and its reissue of Varathron’s 1st demo. Again, never a waste of time to relisten to those recordings.
“Procreation of the Unaltered Evil” is the band’s greeting card, and it quickly set the standards for the Greek scene and for much of what came afterwards. As already stated, the Greek scene had – and still has – a very unique sound, as we were almost able to touch History and savour its moments. Rotting Christ had that ability, and I still understand this specific scene to be a rare case of individuality.
Sound wise, its raw and rotten production add layers and layers to the music, perfectly making it a product of its time, while still being very much up to standards, if not richer than most albums released today. The thing is, musicians did what they could with the very little that they had, and for that they deserve all my respect. However, the music was on a different level. Am I saying that the Old Days were better? I might…
Innocence. Innocence is a word I do see fit when it comes to scrutinizing such releases. And that might be one of the reasons why I prefer older releases to new ones, or at least today’s releases that sound “old”, d’you know what I mean?! “Procreation…” is a demo that had all the elements to make it big! And big it became… instead of opting for utter violence, the band balanced melody and raw aggressiveness, which led to this piece of Mediterranean Black Metal. And that bass… much of the band’s thick sound comes from that bass, wow!
WolfKult Religion is doing the Devil’s work by releasing this piece of
Black Metal’s golden days, giving young fans that possibility of learning a bit
more about the sound we cherish so much. A ground-breaking recording that
lingers to this day… classic.
