Benthik Zone – “Eidolon” (Onism Productions, 2022)

Portugal é, de há muitos anos para cá, uma das forças motrizes do Black Metal actual, seja ele europeu ou mundial. A nossa capacidade de quebrar barreiras, de levar o som para lá dos cânones um dia estabelecidos por alguém, é fantástica! Seja de uma forma mais Primitiva e Visceral, de forma Caótica e Industrial, Atmosféricas Melodias, ou Épicas Sinfonias Medievais, terrestre ou fora deste planeta, os Artistas nacionais que empreendem esta demanda não vêem obstáculos, mas sim desafios. 

Benthik Zone é daquelas entidades que leva a sonoridade para caminhos nunca antes “navegados”. Dissonantes rasgos de classe, melodias atmosféricas e toda uma imagem sonora interestelar. Engraçado que há aqui uma – quase – dicotomia entre a agressividade impulsiva, bastante enraizada num todo muito maquinal, disposta através de fortes batidas e consistentes ritmos frenéticos, a melodias suaves e, também elas, muito “espaciais”. Mas limitar este duo da Invicta a um Extraterrestrial Black Metal, como já li, será imensamente redutor, e muito baseado naquilo que acima é referido: temos o lado maquinal, o lado agreste e pesado; temos a melodia atmosférica e a paz. Na verdade há aqui uma entidade mais complexa do que um simples rótulo, seja na vertente musical, seja na vertente de conteúdo / lírica. Os temas que a banda decide abordar podem, para muitos, estar longe do cerne do género; mas sejamos sinceros: qual é o cerne do género, hoje, Século XXI?! Ainda no campo musical propriamente dito, é interessantíssimo verificar quanto o duo cresce, musicalmente falando, neste trabalho. Há um constante crescendo de intensidade, de densidade, como se estivessemos, lentamente, a ser sugados para um buraco negro, para o término da nossa existência. “Na Iluminação do Presente” recebe-nos de uma forma quase... aprazível, para de imediato nos agredir com ódio e negritude. 

Não basta a uma banda cria ambientes negros, se não for capaz de efectivamente os criar, não sei se me faço entender. Este álbum, de início ao fim, transporta em si uma imensidão de desolação. É este o sentimento que me aperta o peito assim que carrego play. Estranhamente, tal sentimento não advém só da oferenda sonora da banda. Seria muito fácil assumir tal emoção a partir, unicamente, do resultado final de Artur e Francisco, mas nem sempre a negritude nos afoga, há que criar uma simbiose entre aquilo que ouvimos e algo mais... algo que não se coloca em palavras, porque nos faltam os adjectivos para o descrever. O tema acima referido “esconde” em si uma melodia suave e doce, que serve de escapatória para toda a Dor que advém da música. Estranho?! Assumo que sim,  deveras estranho. Muitos dirão que a banda “confiscou” tudo e mais alguma coisa a projectos como BAN ou DSO, e ainda que ouça bastante deles, ainda assim considero que conseguem ser eles próprios, e não posso deixar de referir o recurso à Língua de Pessoa: obrigado por manterem esta característica do vosso trabalho. “Da Zona Perdida no Tempo” tem algo de árabe?! Terei absorvido bem aqueles primeiros momentos?! Vede, senhores e senhoras, como as barreiras – quase – herméticas de um género, se abrem! E ainda que não seja esta a raíz da melodia, a mesma extrapola os “limites aceitáveis”, criando ambiências e momentos deveras distintas. Terminamos esta nossa viagem, à beira-mar. Suavemente, a rebentação acaricia-nos a face, e despertamos. Do espaço estelar à beira-mar, toda uma revolução artística. Alvíssaras senhores, alvíssaras!

Portugal has been one of the driving forces of today's Black Metal for many years now, whether European or global. Our ability to break barriers, to bring sound beyond the canons one day set, is fantastic! Whether in a more Primitive and Visceral way, in a Chaotic and Industrial way, Atmospheric Melodies, or Epic Medieval Symphonies, Terrestrial or Extraterrestrial, the artists who undertake this demand do not see obstacles, but challenges. 

Benthik Zone is one of those entities that takes the sound to paths never before "navigated". Dissonant class, atmospheric melodies, and a whole interstellar sound image. It is funny that there is a - almost - dichotomy between impulsive aggressiveness, quite rooted in a very machine-made whole, arranged through strong beats and consistent frenetic rhythms, soft melodies, very "space-like". But limiting this duo to an Extraterrestrial Black Metal, as I have read, will be immensely reductive, and very much based on what is mentioned above: we have the machine side, the rough and heavy side; we have atmospheric melodies and a strange peaceful sensation. In fact, there is an entity much more complex than a simple label, whether in the musical aspect or in the content / lyric aspect. The themes that the band decides to address may, for many, be far from the core of the genre; but let's be honest: what is the core of the genre today, 21st Century?! Still in the musical field itself, it is interesting to verify how much the duo grows, musically speaking, in this work. There is a constant growth of intensity, of density, as if we were slowly being sucked into a black hole for the end of our existence. "Na Iluminação do Presente" receives us in an almost... pleasant way, to immediately assault us with hatred and blackness. 

It's not enough for a band to create black ambiances, if it's not able to actually create them, I don't know if I make myself understood. This album, from start to finish, carries in itself an immensity of desolation. This is the feeling that squeezes my chest so i carry play. Strangely, such a feeling does not come only from the sound offering of the band. It would be very easy to assume such emotion from the final result of Artur and Francisco alone, but blackness does not always drown us, we must create a symbiosis between what we hear and something else... something that is not put into words, because we lack the adjectives to describe it. The track above mentioned "hides" itself a soft and sweet melody, which serves as an escape for all the Pain that comes from music. Strange?! I take it, yes, very strange. Many will say that the band "confiscated" everything and anything else from projects like BAN or DSO, and even if you hear a lot of them in BZ’s music, I still consider that the duo has crafted an identity, and I cannot fail to mention the use of the Portuguese Language: thank you for keeping this characteristic of your work. “Da Zona Perdida no Tempo“, do I sense some Arabic elements here and there? Have I absorbed those first moments accurately?! See, ladies, and gentlemen, as the barriers – almost – airtight of the genre, open up! And even if this is not the root of the melody, it goes beyond the "acceptable limits", creating really distinct ambiences and moments. We've finished our journey, close to the sea. Gently, the Ocean strokes our faces, and we awaken. From star space to the sea, an entire artistic revolution. Cheers gentlemen, cheers!
