Doppleaxt – “Blood Memory” (Signal Rex, 2022)

Depois de em 2021 terem lançado a Demo “Killing the Opposition”, o trio de Filadélfia, Pensilvânia, regressa com novo material. “Blood Memory” mantém a linha da Demo anterior, com o mesmo nível de qualidade! Bárbaro, violento, épico, melódico sem qualquer risco de cair em clichés, “Blood Memory” é uma excelente homenagem ao Black Metal do anos 90, aquele que arriscava os cânones, que elevava bem alto a bandeira de uma sonoridade imensamente enraizada nas tradições do Passado. Há uma toada Pagã, especialmente nas melodias criadas, e onde se nota que bandas como Moonblood ou Graveland, por exemplo, são claras influências para estes 3 músicos Norte-americanos, pelo que podeis esperar um som fortíssimo e épico! Imaginemos o Quorthon, hoje, Séc. XXI, na sua fase Viking mas sem nunca se ter afastado dos vocais mais cavernosos e primitivos... bem, não assumam que a comparação que não estou a fazer, esteja efectivamente a fazer, mas ficais com uma ideia. Que temos mais? A primeira malha, “Hymn to the Fallen” tem uma melodia bastante próxima do Punk Oi!, o que é uma maravilha! São somente 3 temas, e se a curiosidade de ver como este pessoal se safava em álbum, esta Demo veio aguçar ainda mais o apetite e a curiosidade. Esperemos que não estejamos muito longe de tal.

After releasing the "Killing the Opposition" Demo in 2021, the trio from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, returns with new material. "Blood Memory" keeps the line from the previous Demo, with the same level of quality! Barbaric, violent, epic, melodic without any risk of falling into clichés, "Blood Memory" is an excellent tribute to the Black Metal of the 90s, the one who risked the canons, which raised the flag high aloud of a sound immensely rooted in the traditions of the Past. There is a Pagan “scent”, especially in the melodies created, and where you can see that bands like Moonblood or Graveland, for example, are clear influences for these 3 North American musicians, so you can expect a very strong and epic sound! Let's imagine Quorthon today, 21^st century, in his Viking phase, but without ever having moved away from the most cavernous and primitive vocals... Well, you get an idea. What else do we have? The first track, "Hymn to the Fallen", has a melody very close to Punk Oi!, which is a wonder! There are only 3 tracks, and if the curiosity to see how these lads would get away with an album, this Demo came to sharpen even more my appetite and curiosity. Let's hope we're not too far away from that.

Sword Breaker – “Sword Breaker” (2022)

Bem, muito bem. Se o 2021 foi rico em termos de Oi! O 2022 mantém a chama viva! Este pessoal saído dos tascos de Utrecht, e com um longo historial no Black Metal, arrisca agora uma nova linha musical / criativa: Punk Sleazy Oi! Sweet, direis vós, e sweet it is. A produção é podre o bastante para soar a esgoto ahahah e é assim que o Oi! Deve soar (desculpabilizo The Chisel porque aquilo é mesmo muito bom): nojento, sujo, porco, assustador e claramente “regado” a cerveja, Amstel e Heineken neste caso. Há quem diga que o Oi! Não é, propriamente, um género muito criativo, onde as melodias bem batidas, repetitivas, são a base do mesmo... não mentem. Ainda assim, é mais que possível pegar nessas premissas e fazer maravilhas. Vindo deste pessoal, não esperava outra coisa que não qualidade, e um twist ao género que se propuseram tocar. E assim o temos; é Punk Oi!, que não haja dúvidas disso, mas não foram capazes de ficar quietos e fazer algo... simples. Punk Oi! Com aromas de Garage Rock e afins. Aqui e ali, sem que soe estranho, há pequeníssimos detalhes que me remetem para algumas das criações Black Metal dos protagonistas. Mas creio que é impossivel um Artista afastar-se na totalidade da Arte em que investe mais de si. 4 temas, pouco mais de 10 minutos... ready, set, go!

Well, that's good. If 2021 was rich in terms of Punk Oi!, 2022 keeps the flame alive! These blokes from the pubs of Utrecht, with a long history in Black Metal, now risk a new musical / creative line: Punk Sleazy Ou! Sweet, you'll say, and sweet it is. The production is rotten enough to sound like they recorded this in the sewer ahahah and that's how Oi! should sound (I forgive The Chisel because they are really good): disgusting, dirty, scary, and clearly packed with beer, Amstel and Heineken in this case. Some say Oi! is not exactly a very creative genre, where the well-beaten, repetitive melodies are the basis of it... don't mind. Still, it's more than possible to take these premises and do wonders. Coming from these guys, I didn't expect anything other than quality, and a twist to the genre they set out to play. And so we have it; it's Punk Oi!, there's no doubt about it, but they weren't able to just play... simple Punk Oi! With aromas of Garage Rock,and the like, here and there, without it sounding odd, there are very small details that remind me of some of the Black Metal creations of the protagonists. But I think it's impossible for an Artist to move away from the entire art in which he invests more of himself, so it is more than understandable. 4 tracks just over 10 minutes... ready, set, go!

Insomnia Pálida – “Surtos Psicóticos” (2022)

Tenho a sorte de seguir este projecto desde os seus dias iniciais, e é com prazer que vejo que o crescimento qualitativo é proporcional ao crescimento quantitativo. Sem nomear, e correndo o risco de estar a exagerar, considero que o Artista por trás de Insomnia Pálida apresenta, neste momento, o melhor DSBM feito em Portugal. Desde a “morte”de actos como Inverno Eterno, ou Defuntos, que o sub-género não tem dado mostras de grande actividade – ou sequer qualidade que mereça menção – pelo que o valor a dar a este projecto deva ser deveras elevado. Bragança, o vervdadeiro Norte, como costumo dizer, guarda este segredo, que merece muita mais exposição, muito mais valorização, e no qual a Nekrogoat Heresy Productions pegou, portanto esperemos que o futuro nos traga mais e mais. Aqueles que seguem o projecto há uns anos, sempre se mostraram mais apaixonados pela faceta Depressiva que pelo lado mais Primitivo da música. Das Demos iniciais, ao Split com Íngreme, a música sofreu mutações, evoluções, transições de estados de espírito, até chegarmos a esta Demo específica. Guardo a “Razors” como a malha de Insomnia Pálida com a qual mais me identifico, mas onde não se consegue ter um total vislumbre do Artista como Homem. Esta Demo, seja pelos nomes das músicas, seja pelo artwork, seja pelo sentimento e emoção que transparecem, mostra-nos o grau de demência em que o Artista se encontra, e onde poderíamos recear encontrar todos os clichés associados ao DSBM, encontramos diversos twists, afastando-nos dos pontos menos positivos, por assim dizer, do mesmo. “Alprazolam”, “Diazepam” e “Lorazepam”, três músicas, três inibidores da instabilidade mental e emocional do Ser. A Arte é o espelho do Artista, pelo que temos, aqui, uma imagem da loucura por trás da criação. De mencionar que o último tema é fenomenal! De uma melodia tremenda: escura, arrastada, hipnotizante. Depois de um Split em que tivemos um pouco de tudo aquilo que Insomnia Pálida é – e algo mais – esta Demo relembra-nos que é neste sentimento depressivo e decadente que a Música vive.

I am fortunate to follow this project since its early days, and I am pleased to see that qualitative growth is proportional to quantitative growth. Without naming, and at the risk of exaggerating, I consider that the Artist behind Insomnia Pale presents, at this moment, the best DSBM made in Portugal. Since the "death" of acts such as Inverno Eterno, or Defuntos, that the sub-genre has not shown great activity – or even quality that deserves mention – so the value to be given to this project must be very high. Bragança, the True North, as I say, keeps this secret, which deserves much more exposure, much more appreciation, and which Nekrogoat Heresy Productions took, so hopefully the future will bring us more. Those who have been following the project for a few years have always been more passionate about the Depressive facet, than the more primitive side of music. From the initial Demos to the Split with Íngreme, the Music underwent mutations, evolutions, transitions of moods, until we reached this particular Demo. I keep "Razors" as the music that I most identify with, but where you can't get a full glimpse of the Artist as a Man. This Demo, either by the names of the songs, or by artwork, or by the feeling and emotion that transpose, shows us the degree of dementia in which the Artist is, and where we could fear finding all the clichés associated with the DSBM, we find several twists, moving away from the less positive points, so to speak, of it. "Alprazolam", "Diazepam" and "Lorazepam", three songs, three inhibitors of the mental and emotional instability of the Being. Art is the mirror of the Artist, so we have, here, an image of the madness behind creation. To mention that the last track is phenomenal! From a tremendous melody: dark, dragged, mesmerizing. After a Split in which we had a little of all that project is – and something else – this Demo reminds us that it is in this depressing and decadent feeling that Insomia Pálida’s music lives.
