BAPHOMANCIA
The Realm of the Disgusting and Visceral
Hailing from the hellish depths of California, USA, this demonic duo took a bit of their time to answer some questions. We expect Depravation and Blasphemy. Ladies and Gents, Baphomancia.
This one came in a bit later than I was expecting, and it is a bit old (read through it and find out), but it is impossible to leave out the words of these lads: Gravepisser, Sadismo Necrophallus, and Tony Santanas. Baphomancia, once again!
First I would like to thank you for your time and your answers. First, I need to ask you to tell us, the Portuguese Heavy Metal fans, a bit more about Baphomancia.
Thank you for the interview, and sorry for the late response. There’s been too much stuff going on I hope it’s not too late! Well Baphomancia started in late 2018. Sadismo and I shared the same studio but we were in separate bands. One day we jammed together and decided to make music for true underground maniacs like us.
We have seen, in recent years, more and more bands going back to the roots of Black Metal, creating Dark and Raw Music. Do you believe that one day the scene will implode, considering that more and more bands come out every day?
Yes, it’s inevitable. Especially since bands are using the same themes and same song structures. Today there aren’t a lot of original bands (including us) like there were in the 80s and 90s. People are too focused on labels and genres which is why there isn’t a lot of originality in the scene. Not only, that but more, and more posers, are finding out about Black Metal, which does not help the situation.
What is your perspective on the overall Black Metal Worldwide scenario? Does the genre still hold its primordial core? The spiritual aspect of the genre, is it still there?
Overall, the scene is getting watered down. I would like to see bands talk about other shit besides Satanism and things like that. You can still be dark and not make music about Satan which is what we want to do moving forward. We want to dive deeper into obscurity and write songs with a more philosophical approach. The spirit of the genre is fading because they are not paying respects to the old masters and pioneers of the genre.
The USBM scene is an extremely diverse one. Are the newer bands/musicians “worthy” of being placed alongside the more classical names such as VON or Absu, just to name two. Not that “modern” bands are not good, but has the scene lost a bit of its… glow?
No, not from today at least. The U.S. scene has the least going on. We do not have that many Black Metal bands like other countries, which is sad. One day we would like to get placed alongside great USBM bands like that.
Bands like Profanatica are still recording, are still touring. This is a sign that Black Metal is enduring and that it has gained its rightful place in a more global scene?
Yes, which is a good, and bad thing!
How do you see the European scene? What bands appeal to you the most?
The European scene is good! I like bands like Samael, Mastiphal (Gdansk), Bestial Summoning among many others.
You released, in September of 2019, your first Demo, “Agonized in Belial's Land”. How did the people close to Black Metal receive it?
As far as I know, people liked the demo, which is great. We appreciate all support from the hordes.
Which are the bands/artists that influence you the most? What records have put you on the path of Black Metal?
The bands that influence me the most are Samael ("Worship Him"), Sarcofago ("I.N.R.I."), and Darkthrone ("Under a Funeral Moon"). Those records, and many other, lead me to the path I’m on today. Other honorable mentions are Bathory, Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Unholy.
Will 2020 be a very busy year for the band with touring (maybe Europe) and releasing new material? Moreover, may I ask for Satánofator and Zygotical… are there any plans to release new music?
2020 was not busy at all besides making new music. In addition, one day we will tour Europe hopefully. We have played 3 live shows so far. And no, both of those bands are dead now unfortunately!
We have reached the end of this small interview. Hope to hear from you in the future, and have the opportunity to repeat this. Hope all goes well and thank you for your words and time.
Thank you for
the interview and bestial hails for including us in the zine. I really
appreciate it.
