Trewan – The Sounds of Ancient
Welcome! I hope you find yourself well, especially given the current reality. Speaking of the topic: whether as an artist, as an individual, as a worker, were you affected by this pandemic? How did the German citizen behave in general?
Hello. So far so good. As a
musician, The current Situation didn't affect me in any way. In my Job, I was
actually not really affected by it. Moreover, what the German citizen is up to
has never interested me.
Has the situation - positive or
negative - affected the creation / recording of this Demo? Was it something you
already developed or did the pandemic speed up the process?
Therefore, the Pandemic did not
affect my recording. Actually, it all started a year before the recordings.
However, nothing has been created at this time.
Describe a little of your career as
a musician until the moment you decided to move on with Trewan.
Career is not the right word here. I
bought a Guitar and a Drum kit over 10 years ago. Then I played with a buddy
for a couple of years. Nevertheless, we mostly drank more than played. After
that, I did not do anything for years, until I decided to bring Trewan to life
a year ago.
What do you want to achieve with
Trewan? What is the concept, the message, the idea on which this project is
based?
I never wanted to achieve anything.
I just want to make music. There is no concept either. Before i recorded the
first song, I did not know how the music should be. Everything was created in
the recording process. I recorded the whole Demo in just 4 nights, one song per
night. And the message behind it, is just raw music!
Has your vision of Black Metal, as a
music genre and more, been perfectly implemented with Trewan? Do you have the
feeling that you represent yourself as a musician and as a person?
Hard to say. I think that Trewan
represents me, definitely, as a person and a musician. After all, it is a part
of me. It is definitely not implemented perfectly, not yet.
Your Demo consists of 4 tracks, each
of which is longer than 9 minutes. Have you ever thought about shortening the
songs to make them ... easier to digest?
No. Everything I did, I did during
the recording process. After the first song was finished, I decided to make the
other songs about the same length. Black Metal should never be easy to digest.
How do you manage the label and
distribution process when you are alone? Do you still work independently
without editorial support?
I am not interested in labels.
Everything is managed and financed by myself, and I take all of the recordings
at home. And I don't have any support, but I don't need that either. That all
is a part of my music.
When you look at the genre of what
Black Metal has become - good for some, bad for some - do you feel that the
premises remain? Do you think fans, for example, are living the genre the way
you see fit (whatever is right), or are they immersed in photos for social
networks and have a more "boastful" attitude towards living the
music?
Well, Black Metal has of course
changed over the years. But certain structures still existed, in my opinion.
The scene is too big to say whether the premises still exist. for some, not for
others. And with the fans there are differences. There are still people who
live the music. However, the boastful attitude, especially on social networks,
is now part of life for many. Which I personally find stupid.
At the production level, and correct
me if I'm wrong, you've gone for something very simple where the melodies
become the heart of your craft. What was your intention from the beginning, or
were you faced with impossibilities?
I always wanted my music to be simple
and raw. On the one hand, because that is my definition of Black Metal on the
other hand I'm not the best musician. So actually, I was not really confronted
with impossibilities.
As for the creative process, are you
one of those musicians who have to go into "composition mode", or
does inspiration come from nowhere?
So I always have ideas for new stuff.
When I have an idea I write it down or I record it. Nevertheless, during the
songwriting and the recording I have to isolate myself a little. The songs were
always recorded at night.
And what inspires you to design?
Whether music, art in general, what surrounds you ... where will you take
inspiration from?
I live here in the middle of the
forest, full of ancient rocks and trees. This ancient spirit of the forest
influences me a lot. The darkness and fear also affect my music.
Did the pandemic allow you to create
new music, new ideas? Will we have something new soon? Be curious to see where
you will take your music.
As I said, the pandemic did not
affect Trewan. The Demo was written and recorded during the pandemic. So yes,
the pandemic allowed me to create new music. Now, I'm recording new stuff for a
split with the solo project Claviger. there is also a bit of material for a
second Demo.
Do you think that this situation,
the obligation placed on us to adopt certain behaviors and to care more about
our fellow human beings, could lead to real changes in human behavior? Can
intolerance and prejudices, which have grown more and more, be “erased” from
our society as a result of this situation?
I do not think that humans are able
to make such changes in such a short time. Egoism and greed will always exist.
However, I am not interested in the majority of humanity to form a real opinion
about it.
Well, once again my sincere thanks
for the opportunity and the music. Hope we can speak again in the future. Cheers,
buddy.
Of course, we can talk again in the
future, after all, it's just the beginning. Cheers.
E.
