Diabolical Fullmoon
“The Depths of the Slavic Land” (Total War / Medieval Prophecy Records, 2022)

Poland has been, for years and years, a treasure in terms of good Black Metal. We are all very much aware of how the scene is composed - or at least at a certain moment in time - and all the controversy that exists within it. Politics aside, even if one must never forget about it, we have Music and a relatively young band: Diabolical Fullmoon. The band started out in 2020, with Leszy (instruments & voice) and Nott (lyrics). Clearly influenced by some of the most controversial bands from the Polish Black Metal scene, like Veles and Infernum, Diabolical Fullmoon encapsulate the atmosphere and the melodies that made both mentioned bands as good as they are.

Slow to mid-pace, dark atmospheres, haunting vocals, rotten and raw production, this is how the band operates; an old sound, classical sound, dusty sound, as I like to call it. “The Depths of the Slavic Land” is a 9-minute homage to this dark sound. Just 2 tracks - “The Depths of the Slavic Land” and “Lost Ancestry” - are enough to confirm the top-notch quality of the duo. Their music is this mix of harsh Black Metal, and some soft Pagan melodies. No, no. no! The idea of mentioning a Pagan sonority scares Black Metal that like Black Metal the way it is supposed to be done - elitist, I know - but bear with me. Eastern European Black Metal bands, and the Poles were amazing at doing that, added this melody layer that gave the music that melodic “scent”, and Diabolical Fullmoon has that ability, which turns their sound into this grandiose sound. If we go back to 2021, to “In Wallachia” (from “The Pagan Wolves Will Rise Again”), you will be able to see what the band’s sound actually is in reality. This is an amazing tune, one that encapsulates what Diabolical Fullmoon is.

Their latest EP’s first track - “The Depths of the Slavic Land” - is a hard Black Metal track, a punishing one, but very dynamic. These “oscillations” are amazing if I may say so. The change in pace, the change in melody, how they deconstruct their previous structure, to give way to a different approach… superb. “Lost Ancestry” is, like the first track, rooted in an old sound, with the keyboard well present, which offers the music a more haunting atmosphere and a harsh, yet beautiful, melody. The pace, again the pace; this allows the music to flow and sound beautiful. “Lost Ancestry” is a magnificent track, no doubt. We are yet to talk about the vocals. The vocals merge perfectly with the music, with the pace, with everything. Demonic enough to leave you wanting more. Need to mention how good the production is. Not only does it highlight the instruments, but it enhances the vocals and the characteristics I mentioned. Just 2 songs, but both are amazing!
