Evilfeast
“Mysteries of the Nocturnal Forest” (Eisenwald, 2018)

It is not easy, in my modest opinion, to review a release like Evilfeast’s first Full-length. And why, you ask. Well, I have always looked at the project, and the project’s mentor - GrimSpirit - as very under looked and underrated. I have always looked at the project as a special entity. The music, the aura, everything around it. We look for honesty within the Black Metal circle/scene/universe, but many lack that quality. I have always looked at the project as having that honesty. The way Jakub Grzywacz crafts his pieces is a showcase of honesty and love for the artistic path he chose. In that sense, Evilfeast has always been looked at, by me, as this precious musical expression.

“Mysteries of the Nocturnal Forest” is the band’s first album after the release of the Demo, “Thy Abhorrent Emerging”, in 2002. Two years later this masterpiece of 21st Century Black Metal was released. Polish Black Metal has this grandiose way of being. Be it a Folk version of Black Metal, or a more Ambient one, the Poles are perfect craftmanship when it comes to dissonant, yet majestic, melodies. Their Black Metal is not mandatorily Symphonic nor orchestral, but they have that certain something. Evilfeast, in specific, lives on the rawer side of the spectrum, while being able to, at the same time, hold that magnificent atmospheric feature. We do have plenty of Atmospheric Black Metal projects/artists that combine both worlds, but very little can “battle” with the likes of Evilfeast or Paysage d’Hiver (another juggernaut of power).

“Mysteries of the Nocturnal Forest” clocks at little under 1 hour, but it is very easy to absorb, in the sense that it flows very naturally, with ease, and although tracks long, they flow extremely well. I truly feel Evilfeast is very ignored. Take “Descending Winds of Holocaust” and the moment the synthesizers jump in… an already great tune turns into an epic moment! These details are what give Evilfeast its status, in my opinion. This is an homage to dark and freezing days; melodies of haunted places that take over the listener and cradle us throughout the night. The production is just perfect for the atmosphere I can only assume he was going for, and it does give the music that extra something that I love, that we love. Darken atmospheres and delicate melodies… I will keep that as an almost accurate description.
