Sonneillon
“The Demon of Hate” (Masters of Kaos Productions, 2023)

I dare say (some) people have no real notion of how good the Portuguese Black Metal scene actually is; it is a very dynamic and diversified scene, which is what gave it the dimension it has today. From the Raw and Visceral approach of a band like Vetala has, to the Epic and Majestic tunes of newcomer Spellsword, and all in between, the Portuguese Black Metal musicians are one of a kind.

Sonneillon has been around for a while. The band established itself in 2008, and that same year released and EP (“Diabolic War”). Since then, the band has been consistently releasing new music, which has shown a band in constant growth and evolution. “The Demon of Hate” is the band’s 2nd Full-length after 2017’s “Daemoniacus…”, and it is a very nice leap in terms of the overall music.

Sonneillon plays a Melodic, yet at times aggressive and harsh, Black Metal. Very well-structured and with excellent moments of diversity. Overall, this release is very consistent and solid. Take for example a track like “Aglasis”. Those moments where the band seems to slow things down and build those “smoother” atmospheres, is where they show their abilities. It is easier to go for the more violent and aggressive side of Black Metal, but to play with two different musical scenarios is a lot harder.

And here is where I state - and truly believe - that our scene is much bigger than what people think. Truth be told, since we were beaten down by the Raw Black Metal wave that exploded some years back (the most recent one, lads), some of us have been ignoring this line of Black Metal, the more melodic and with a great production. From time to time, I do enjoy listening to a crisp Black Metal album, where the musicians show all their craftmanship. I remember listening to recent albums from Enthroned, for example, and really enjoying their sound and how it excelled their music.

“The Demon of Hate” is, as I mentioned before, a very consistent album. The guitar work is tremendous, and it does take you back to the older days of Black Metal. “Spells in the Bones of Traitors” is a sweet memory of days of old, and those guitar riffs were taken from dustier times! Everything is balanced and aligned to perfection. Top-notch track, no doubt about it.

In conclusion, this is a very strong release by a band that has all the skills to deliver this level of Black Metal; a band that has been around for many years and understands “the scene” and its perks and guidelines; an album that deserves to reach a much bigger audience for it has all the pieces a Black Metal fan looks for in a well-crafted album. I advise you all to give it a go and dwell into the band’s catalogue. All in all, a great Portuguese Black Metal album.
