“To Bare the Weight of Death” (Vendetta Records, 2024)

Strangely, last year was a year of change in terms of the sort of sound I usually aim at. Coming from old sounds, got hooked on the rawest side of the spectrum, and stayed there for a long time. 2023 was the year I rediscovered my love for a polished Black Metal sound, good production, and plenty of melody. A tad like the 90ies, I reckon. And the best thing about it was discovering many bands that I would have ignored if I did not get tired of the same sound, repeatedly…

2024 started like 2023 ended: cleaner, more melodic, and with that came Andracca (and many more). Andracca is a quartet from Lancashire, England, North Wales, who have a sound based on Tolkien mythology (geeked out). One thing the Raw Black Metal scene did was, unconsciously, label some of the Black Metal scene as weak and overly melodic. Only Raw Sound is Real! That lead to great bands, and immensely awful musicians making music that should have never seen the darkness of their basements. In all walks of life, you have good and bad; no way to escape that but try to filter. Back on track: a bit tired of the Raw Black Metal scene, gave the well-produced Black Metal scene another go, ended up finding Andracca.

Andracca has a melodic Black Metal sound, consistent and bulky, if that makes sense. Majestic moments and details that provide an almost feeling of melancholy. Andracca’s sound is very well-structured, especially in the sense that it almost perfectly combines moods, emotions… The aggressive side of their music fuses very well with that less aggressive, and more emotional, facet. Never over-speeding their music, Andracca builds up momentums, concluding with instants of climax. The guitar work is very interesting. This is where the melody comes from, this is where the band “places” their music. The vocals are another interesting asset. There is always this emotion, this despair, I risk say that at times it goes to an almost DSBM vocal register, to quickly grow to an epic growl! Really loving these guys.

Give them a go and you might be surprised.

Invicta Reqviem Mass Seventh Gathering Well, hello there. Getting close to this year’s finest UG Black Metal gathering, are we? Oh yes, we are! Túmulo “Cristo Demente” (Tapeworm Records, 2023) The idea of a Swiss band, singing in Brazilian Portuguese, and playing Speed Thrash Metal from the 80ies, South American style, made no sense until I came across Túmulo, from Zurich, singing in Brazilian Portuguese, and playing Speed Thrash Metal from the 80ies, South American style. Yes, it might sound… misplaced or even confusing, but it happened, and thank them for that. Túmulo is a 3-piece Heavy Metal attack from Zurich: Death Vomit, Forhammer, and Miasma are the Wretched Three, and repulsive Heavy Metal is their game. Totally intoxicated on Sarcófago, Holocausto, Rotting Christ, and Hellhammer, the trio brings forth a sound that could be classified/labeled/named/etc., as an homage to Old School Extreme Metal. From the logo to the band member names, all stenches of Old School Heavy Metal.   Marthe “Further in Evil” (Southern Lord, 2023) I was completely unaware of the existence of this project, and only today stumbled upon it while scrolling on a very famous Black Metal group on Facebook. While reading the description of a photo, I saw The Devil’s Blood and Mediterranean Heavy Metal influences mentioned, as well as Antifascism and Italy. Scrolled down a bit more and read Bathory. Went straight to YouTube and added Tiamat, “Clouds” era (vocals at times), to it. It might sound a bit strange and misplaced, but let me tell you: it bloody works. Marthe is composed of one single musician, Marziona Silvani – stage/artist name, Marzia – and she has been around for some time. From what I understood, Marthe started out while Marzia was still rocking the drums in Ancient Cult, an Italian Heavy Doom band that since then closed the doors on existence.
