Congruity – “Shattered”

   Segundo informação, a banda está situada no espectro Black/Death. Por norma fujo destes híbridos. Não consigo assimilar a vertente Black Metal, já que o Death Metal espreita a cada esquina e, quem me conhece, sabe bem que Death Metal é género que pura e simplesmente não consigo assimilar. Sim, nem os clássicos, esses que estais a enumerar e a questionar como raio pode, um gajo, não ouvir. O som destes Congruity vive entre ambos os géneros referidos. No passado dos membros de Congruity há referências a uma banda com uma sonoridade Gothic Metal (Edenial Lust), mas que de certo modo mantém-se um tanto ou quanto viva, aqui. O recurso a teclas, “entrelaçadas” com a sonoridade reminiscente dos anos 90, as vocalizações (principais) mais ásperas e “animalescas” – essas sim, claramente Death Metal – criam aqui uma coisinha bastante agradável. Adoro aquele Black Metal dos 90, com os interlúdios de teclado, os “rendilhados”e todas as ambiências mais doces, e os Congruity conseguem, com estes elementos e/ou outros, chegar a esse nível de sonoridade. Soará datada? Não considero. Aliás, bandas como Vargrav já nos mostraram que recorrer a estruturas, supostamente ultrapassadas e datadas, associadas a uma actualização sonora, tende a resultar muito bem (não é, esta, uma comparação entre a banda em análise e aquela que editou um dos álbuns do ano de 2019).

   O tema “Shattered”, por exemplo, é das melhores malhas de metal extremo português que tive oportunidade de ouvir este ano. As vocalizações, grunhos de Death Metal e as vocalizações secundárias mais na linha de Black Metal, apoiadas num instrumental, mais uma vez, reminiscente dos anos 90, acaba por despoletar, em nós, a ideia “já ouvi isto em algum lado”! Não que tenhamos ouvido ISTO, mas já ouvimos algo imensamente similar a isto. Pessoalmente, todo o EP me parece muitíssimo bem concebido, e admito que estes Congruity me eram – a nível sonoro – totalmente desconhecidos, o que é uma vergonha, já que os mesmos contam com 20 anos de carreira! Mas o som, mais uma vez: a banda consegue criar uma simbiose muito consistente entre aqueles que são os seus géneros de escolha. Há um fio condutor que liga todos os elementos, fazendo com que soem como um só. Há variações e transições, claro, mas são feitas de um modo tão delicado que mal damos por elas. Honestamente, soberbo.

   De referir que a produção ajuda muitíssimo a que o produto final soe, ele também, “datado".

Congruity - “Shattered”

   According to information, the band is “located” on the Black / Death spectrum. I usually run away from these hybrids. I cannot assimilate the Black Metal aspect, since Death Metal lurks around every corner and, who knows me, knows well that Death Metal is a genre that I simply cannot assimilate. Yes, not even the classics, the ones you are enumerating and questioning how the hell can a guy not hear. The sound of these Congruity lives between both genres. In the past, members of Congruity had a band with a Gothic Metal sound (Edenial Lust) and that, in a way, remains somewhat alive, here. The use of keys, "intertwined" with the sonority reminiscent of the 90s, the harsher and "animalistic" (main) vocalizations - these, clearly, Death Metal - create a very pleasant offering. I love that Black Metal of the 90s, with the keyboard interludes, the “lacy” and all the sweetest ambiences, and Congruity can, with these elements and others, reach that level of sound.

   Will it sound dated? I do not consider it will. In fact, bands like Vargrav have already shown us that resorting to structures, supposedly outdated and dated, associated with a sound update, tends to work very well (this is not a comparison between the band under analysis and the one that edited one of the albums of 2019). The track “Shattered”, for example, is one of the best meshes of Portuguese extreme metal that I had the opportunity to hear this year. The lead vocals – grunts of Death Metal – and the second vocals, more in the line of Black Metal, supported by an instrumental, again, reminiscent of the 90s, ends up triggering, in us, the idea “I've heard this somewhere”! Not that we've heard THIS, but we've heard something immensely similar to this. Personally, the whole EP seems, to me, extremely well conceived, and I admit that these Congruity were - on a sound level - totally unknown to me, which is a shame, since they have a 20-year career! But the sound, once again: the band manages to create a very consistent symbiosis among those who are their genres of choice. There is a thread that connects all the elements, making them sound as one. There are variations and transitions, of course, but they are done in such a delicate way that we barely notice them. Honestly, superb.

   It should be noted that the production helps, in the end, for it to sound "dated".

Hate Diposal – “Legacy”

   A outra metade desta oferta é-nos servida pelos Hate Disposal, metade essa que nos apresenta um Death Metal com travos de Thrash Metal e um som mais técnico. O Death Metal aqui apresentado assemelha-se mais ao que os nórdicos criaram do que àquele do outro lado do Atlântico. Há aquela violência sonora, sim, mas a mesma vem acompanhada de uma melodia mais… europeia, por assim dizer. Death Metal não é, desde sempre, um género que musicalmente me agrade. Gostos são gostos e o Death Metal não é para mim. Ainda assim, há bandas que fazem um som que me agrada, aqui e ali. At the Gates são uma delas. Há ATG nestes Gate Disposal? Não diria tal, mas há Suècia – como também há Death, a banda (?) – Estes Hate Disposal vivem, como acima referido, no Death Metal. São competentes, apresentam riffs orelhudos q.b. O trabalho de guitarra é, sem dúvida, bastante atractivo e dinâmico, dando ao som um “colorido”. Há Thrash, como também já foi referido. Há momentos que me remetem para o groove de Pantera, mas elevado a um patamar superior de “violência”, NÃO SENDO ESTA A BASE MUSICAL DA BANDA, ATENÇÃO!

   Feitas as contas: é Death Metal melódico com uma produção limpíssima. É daquelas bandas que o underground nacional adora e que seguirá a trilhar caminho e a partir todo e qualquer palco em que pouse.

Hate Diposal - “Legacy”

   The other half of this offer is served to us by Hate Disposal, half of which features Death Metal with Thrash Metal details and a more technical sound. The Death Metal presented here is more similar to what the Nordics created, than that on the other side of the Atlantic. There is that sonic violence, yes, but it comes with a more… European melody, so to speak. Death Metal has never been a genre that I like musically. Tastes are tastes, and Death Metal is not for me. Still, there are bands that make a sound that pleases me, here and there. At the Gates are one of them. Is there ATG at these Hate Disposal? I wouldn't say that, but there is Sweden - as there is also Death, the band (?)). They are competent, have eared riffs. The guitar work is undoubtedly very attractive and dynamic, giving the sound a “colorful” feel. There is Thrash, as has already been mentioned. There are moments that remind me of Pantera's groove, but raised to a higher level of "violence".

   All in all, it is melodic Death Metal with a very clean production. It is one of those bands that the national underground loves, and that will continue to follow their path, and destroy every stage on which they land.
