Psychonaut 4
“… Of
Mourning” (Immortal Frost Productions, 2024)
Psychonaut 4 have been spreading their specific human condition for several years now, 14 to be more precise, and only now have I contacted their sound! The name was well-known, but the music was not. I have never been a fan of the more depressive side of the genre, and these lads live inside that sphere; thing is, their sound has small details that sound differently. There is a different dynamic in all their sound, an almost progressive and psychedelic approach. No, not a Floydian one, ok? They have guitar solos that sound quite cheerful. Wait… are they not on the depressive side of the globe? Maybe they are…
The more you listen to this record, the more you are able to hear the different moments the band has crafted. Several emotions and stages of existence. Funny how their sound has these 2 opponent personas: sadness and joyfulness. Well, I can hear and feel moments of clarity and clear skies. But sadness does not mean bleak skies. Music wise, I started to enjoy how they present their melodies and contrasts. In my opinion their music lives of these opposite dimensions, and we, the listener, are caught in the middle of it, expecting to be surprised, which we are! The usage of acoustic guitars is massively welcomed, and they provide so much warmth and feeling to the music!
Female vocals, here and there, have the same effect as the acoustic guitar. They add an extra layer to the music, and it grabs the listener. It worked with me. Well… is this Black Metal? A question that popped up during the listening session. It has its moments, and they are good! Their core is within the realm of Black Metal, but their sound is much broader than just a label, in my honest opinion, and I ended up, legitimately, enjoying every moment of this record! I take their music is an almost soundtrack to emotions and heavy burdens. Musically, they drift away from the bigger names of the subgenre, and that is great!
Those monotonous sounding bands
that add nothing, and insist in absolute and eternal sadness, but cannot engage
in an attractive sound, are never exciting and appealing for some listeners,
but Lifelover, for instance, was an act that had that dangerous edge, that
element that differentiated them from the pack. Psychonaut 4 are not Lifelover,
which is not bad at all; they have their own identity in a vast world of
musicians and depressive melodies. Personally, I really enjoyed this set of
songs. May you listen to it repeatedly.
