Sartael – “Demo” (2020 Signal Rex)

Mais uma vez o Underground nacional dá mostras de que a ebulição criativa é uma constante, sendo o Black Metal o seu ponto mais activo. A Signal Rex, também ela, continua a dar provas de que se mantém na frente de batalha, apostando em novos projectos e ajudando a manter a chama viva, por mais cliché que isto soe.

Desta feita um novo projecto, de um homem só – Aphormenos – vem engrossar as fileiras da cena Black Metal portuguesa com a sua visão do género. Tive a oportunidade de colocar algumas questões – por email, obviamente – à mente criativa por detrás de Sartael com vista a entender um pouco da realidade que alimenta o projecto, a sua música e as convicções pessoais e artísticas, resultando na música disponível nesta Demo.

São 3 temas e 1 intro, e há algo que, aquando da primeira audição, sobressaiu: a ideia de que estes 4 temas foram gravados em momentos distintos, apartados uns dos outros, havendo alguma diferença sonora entre os mesmos. Atenção! A disparidade não é impeditiva de qualidade. Mas claro, quem sou eu para avaliar um produto musical assim, sem as bases técnicas para tal?! E, posso estar totalmente equivocado. Admito que a primeira malha que ouvi – “Count Orlok”, creio – ainda não se falava da Signal Rex assegurar o projecto, não me agarrou, não deu o click nem despertou a curiosidade para o que viria num futuro não longínquo. E também aqui, e após a audição de todos os temas que compõem a Demo, fiquei com a idea de que a disparidade era a todos os níveis (sonora, temática, etc). Não posso apontar o dedo/criticar por não ser um trabalho conceptual, isso seria absurdo, mas vem dar mais força à teoria da (aparente) distância temporal que separa os temas aqui presentes.

Quanto aos restantes temas: a Intro que, apesar de repetitiva, ajuda a marcar o ambiente que esperava ouvir no decurso dos 3 temas que a precedem. “Canto de Monsanto”, mais em sintonia com a que lhe segue – “Adversary” – perfazem duas malhas que me parecem mais consistentes e mais em linha uma com a outra. Há melodia, há agressividade e há força, não soam “distantes” ou diferentes. “Count Orlok”, a encerrar a Demo, não é de modo algum, um tema fraco. É sim, distinta das demais o bastante para soar desfasada, seja pela produção, seja pela própria estrutura da mesma. Como dito anteriormente, esta minha análise não se apoia num conhecimento técnico de Música, mas sim de emoções que retiro da mesma, podendo por tal estar a incorrer em erros – crassos – e falhas. As minhas desculpas, desde já, se esta perspectiva não se enquadra com a do artista.

De forma geral parece-me uma boa primeira apresentação. Esperemos que os trabalhos seguintes sejam mais consistentes e uniformes, visto haver aqui pormenores interessantes.

Como referido na pequena review acima, tive a oportunidade de colocar algumas questões a Aphormenos, no sentido de conhecer um pouco mais a pessoa por detrás de Sartael. Será, espero, a primeira de várias.

Que é Sartael e de onde vem? Fala-nos um pouco do percurso que tomaste até à efectivação da ideia, o germinar do projecto, etc.

Sou um grande fã de Black Metal desde há bastante tempo. As cenas que me puxaram mais foram sempre a Portuguesa e a Finlandesa. Com base na mistura dessas sonoridades, mais ou menos desde 2017 que estava interessado em criar o meu próprio projeto, e essa foi sempre a motivação. O nome SARTAEL surgiu em 2018, quando vi um filme espanhol de terror medieval, que tinha uma personagem com esse nome, e, desde que o ouvi, fiquei logo decidido a utilizá-lo. SARTAEL é um espírito enviado ao mundo mortal para capturar as almas perdidas e carregá-las consigo para o inferno. Já tinha um nome, e, a partir daí, foi começar a trabalhar. Em 2019 decidi começar a escrever umas músicas e a focar-me seriamente no projeto. De vários rascunhos surgiu a música Count Orlok, lançada a 18 de Dezembro de 2019.

Suponho que ser a única mente criadora acabe por evitar uma série de confusões e atritos. Trabalhar sozinho era algo a que já estavas habituado?

Não estava de todo habituado a trabalhar sozinho. SARTAEL era para começar como uma banda, com mais pessoal, mas meteram-se algumas complicações a nível de tempo e ideias, e senti que estava a atrasar algo que já devia estar em progresso, então decidi começar sozinho e compor e tocar a primeira música, e, consequentemente, toda a Demo. Para além disso, tinha uma visão pessoal para o projeto e não queria abdicar dela, então decidi mantê-la e fazer a minha cena, desse modo evitando todas as confusões e artritos possíveis. Apesar de não estar habituado a compôr, gravar e misturar, muito menos passar pelo processo todo sozinho, fiz o que pude com aquilo que tinha e isso é o mais importante.

O que é, para ti, o Black Metal, e de que modo a tua definição do mesmo se cruza com aquilo que tu és, como indivíduo?

Uma das coisas que considero mais importantes no Black Metal é o individualismo. O facto deste ser um género que permite a toda a gente manifestar as suas ideias e transmitir as suas mensagens, se bem que algumas coisas eram completamente desnecessárias. O que acho que algumas pessoas não entendem ainda, é que o Black Metal é mais do que um simples género musical. Passa por ser toda uma ideologia ou até um estilo de vida.

Acho que o Black Metal é algo com o qual me identifiquei desde que o descobri, por diversas razões, incluindo o individualismo e a força de expressão, e sinto que com o meu projeto consigo expressar-me e transmitir a minha mensagem. Para além disso, existem ideologias e práticas com as quais me consigo identificar, e pelas quais eu ajo e reago no meu quotidiano. Esta pergunta é complicada, o Black Metal representa várias coisas para mim, mas, resumidamente, influencia o meu estilo de vida e a minha visão em relação a diversas coisas que estão mal no mundo.

Sartael acaba por ser o veículo da perspectiva/definição que tens do mesmo?

SARTAEL é a minha contribuição para o género. Se é boa ou má isso fica ao critério dos outros, mas da minha parte foi algo que fiz com base no meu interesse por este género musical. Também tentei manter ao máximo a sonoridade primitiva e old school dos anos 90, algo que era uma das ideias principais por trás do conceito.

Como foi conceber este primeiro trabalho? Foi esta a tua primeira “aventura” no mundo da música?

Já tinha trabalhado em mistura e masterização de música, e tinha uma ideia prévia do que queria para o meu som, por isso, apesar de trabalhoso, já tinha o conceito definido e, de tal modo, essa foi a parte mais fácil. O mais trabalhoso foi mesmo encontrar a minha sonoridade musical, a composição das letras e música. Lembro-me que a Count Orlok foi a que levou mais tempo a escrever, principalmente por causa da procura pela melodia certa e algo que se identificasse com o som que eu queria. Resumindo, foi um processo complicado mas que valeu a pena, especialmente quando pude ver o projeto final.

Como chegaste à Signal Rex, ou foi o processo inverso? Crês que esta te poderá dar uma exposição que de outra forma terías mais dificuldades em conseguir?

A "Count Orlok" foi lançada em 2019, e, nos meses seguintes tive de pôr Sartael um bocado de parte, apesar de ter continuado a compôr e a gravar, ainda que menos vezes. Em abril deste ano, fui contactado pela Signal Rex, que, após ouvir a Count, estava interessada em ouvir a Demo completa. Para não perder essa oportunidade, parei um bocado as restantes coisas que estava a fazer na altura, e dediquei umas semanas a terminar a Demo. Quando a terminei, enviei o produto final e ficaram interessados em editar a Demo sob o selo da Signal Rex. Tendo o estatuto que tem como editora de Black Metal (nacional e internacional), aceitei fazê-lo pois, tal como disseste, é a melhor maneira de ganhar exposição num meio sobrecarregado. É certo que, sem eles, o processo teria sido bastante mais complicado.

Que te influencia a criar a música que crias? Há algum álbum ou banda, alguma obra literária, quiçá, que te tenha influenciado a criar este projecto?

Já tive pessoas que ouviram a Demo e me disseram que conseguem encontrar nela influências do Black Metal escandinavo do início dos anos 90 (Mayhem, Burzum). Ainda assim, se tivesse de escolher duas bandas que uso como inspiração para a sonoridade de SARTAEL, essas seriam IRAE e Satanic Warmaster. O som mais primitivo e intenso e a produção mais crua são características que aprecio bastante. Em termos de obras literárias, existe um livro que uso como inspiração para certas músicas, como a Adversary, que é «The Bible of The Adversary» de Michael W. Ford, também conhecido como Akhtya Nachttoter de Black Funeral. Para além disso vou buscar muita inspiração à Mãe Natureza e a lendas e mitos medievais.

Que fim desejas atingir com Sartael e quais são os planos para o futuro (breve e distante)?

SARTAEL será sempre o meu projeto, e irei continuar a trabalhar nele daqui para a frente. A Demo 2020 foi só o começo e uma pequena amostra do que aí vem. Posso dizer que já comecei a composição do próximo lançamento, mas não tem data definida nem posso dizer que está para breve, pois não há nada ainda planeado.

Sartael – “Demo” (2020 Signal Rex)

Once again the Portuguese Underground shows that the creative boiling is a constant, with Black Metal being its most active point. Signal Rex, as well, continues to demonstrate that it remains on the front lines, betting on new projects and helping to keep the flame alive, however cliché this sounds.

This time a new one-man project - Aphormenos - joins the ranks of the Portuguese Black Metal scene with its vision of the genre. I had the opportunity to ask some questions - by email, obviously - to the creative mind behind Sartael in order to understand a little bit of the reality that feeds the project, his music and his personal and artistic convictions, resulting in the music available in this Demo.

There are 3 tracks and 1 intro, and there is something that stood out at the time of the first hearing: the idea that these 4 themes were recorded at different times, apart from each other, with some sound difference between them. Attention! The disparity is not an impediment to quality. But of course, who am I to evaluate a musical product like this, without the technical bases for it ?! And, I can be totally wrong. I admit that the first fabric I heard - "Count Orlok", I believe - there was still no talk of Signal Rex securing the project, it didn't grab me, didn't click or aroused my curiosity for what would come in the not-too-distant future. And also here, and after hearing all the themes that make up the Demo, I got the idea that the disparity was at all levels (sound, thematic, etc.). I can't point the finger / criticize for not being a conceptual work, that would be absurd, but it gives more strength to the theory of the (apparent) temporal distance that separates the themes present here.

As for the remaining tracks: Intro, which, despite being repetitive, helps to mark the atmosphere that I expected to hear in the course of the 3 themes that precede it. “Canto de Monsanto”, more in tune with the one that follows it - “Adversary” - make two meshes that seem more consistent and more in line with each other. There is melody, there is aggression and there is strength, they do not sound “distant” or different. "Count Orlok", ending Demo, is by no means a weak track. Yes, it is distinct from the others enough to sound out of step, either due to production or the structure itself. As stated earlier, this analysis of mine is not based on a technical knowledge of Music, but on emotions and sensations that I derive from it, and may therefore be incurring mistakes - gross - and failures. My apologies, right now, if this perspective does not fit with that of the artist.

In general it seems like a good first presentation. We hope that the following works will be more consistent and uniform, as there are interesting details here.

Interview with Aphormenos

As mentioned in the short review above, I had the opportunity to ask Aphormenos some questions, in the sense of getting to know the person behind Sartael a little more. It will, I hope, be the first of several.

What is Sartael and where does it come from? Tell us a little about the path you took until the realization of the idea, the germination of the project, etc.

I've been a big fan of Black Metal for a long time. The scenes that pulled me the most were always Portuguese and Finnish. Based on the mix of these sounds, more or less since 2017, I was interested in creating my own project, and that was always the motivation. The name SARTAEL came up in 2018, when I saw a Spanish medieval horror film, which had a character with that name, and since I heard it, I was soon determined to use it. SARTAEL is a spirit sent to the mortal world to capture lost souls and carry them with him to hell. He already had a name, and from there, he started to work. In 2019 I decided to start writing some songs and to seriously focus on the project. From several drafts came the song Count Orlok, released on December 18, 2019.

I suppose that being the only creative mind ends up avoiding a series of confusions and frictions. Was working alone something you were used to?

He was not at all used to working alone. SARTAEL was supposed to start as a band, with more staff, but there were some complications in terms of time and ideas, and I felt I was delaying something that should already be in progress, so I decided to start alone and compose and play the first song , and, consequently, the entire Demo. In addition, I had a personal vision for the project and did not want to give it up, so I decided to keep it and make my scene, thus avoiding all possible confusion and arthritis. Although I am not used to composing, recording and mixing, let alone go through the process all by myself, I did what I could with what I had and that is the most important thing.

What is Black Metal for you? And how does your definition of it intersect with what you are, as an individual?

One of the things I consider most important in Black Metal is individualism. The fact that this is a genre that allows everyone to express their ideas and convey their messages, although some things were completely unnecessary. What I think some people still don't understand is that Black Metal is more than just a musical genre. It passes for being an entire ideology or even a lifestyle.

I think Black Metal is something that I have identified with since I discovered it, for several reasons, including individualism and the strength of expression, and I feel that with my project I can express myself and convey my message. In addition, there are ideologies and practices with which I can identify, and by which I act and react in my daily life. This question is complicated, Black Metal represents several

things for me, but, in short, it influences my lifestyle and my outlook on various things that are wrong in the world.

Does Sartael end up being your perspective / definition vehicle?

SARTAEL is my contribution to gender. Whether it is good or bad it is up to others, but for me it was something I did based on my interest in this music genre. I also tried to keep the primitive and old school sounds of the 90s to the maximum, something that was one of the main ideas behind the concept.

How was it to conceive this first work? Was this your first “adventure” in the music world?

I had already worked on mixing and mastering music, and I had a prior idea of ​​what I wanted for my sound, so, although laborious, I already had the concept defined and, in such a way, that was the easy part. The most difficult thing was to find my musical sound, the composition of lyrics and music. I remember that Count Orlok was the one that took the longest to write, mainly because of the search for the right melody and something that identified with the sound I wanted. In short, it was a complicated process but it was worth it, especially when I could see the final project.

How did you get to Signal Rex, or was it the other way around? Do you think it can give you an exhibition that you would otherwise have a harder time getting?

Count Orlok was launched in 2019, and in the following months I had to put Sartael a little bit apart, despite having continued to compose and record, even less often. In April of this year, I was contacted by Signal Rex, which, after listening to Count, was interested in hearing the complete Demo. In order not to miss this opportunity, I stopped the rest of the things I was doing at the time, and spent a few weeks finishing the Demo. When I finished it, I sent the final product and they were interested in editing the Demo under the Signal Rex seal. Having the status that he has as a publisher of Black Metal (national and international), I accepted to do it because, as you said, it is the best way to gain exposure in an overloaded medium. It is true that, without them, the process would have been much more complicated.

What influences you to create the music you create? Is there an album or band, any literary work, perhaps, that influenced you to create this project?

I have had people who heard the Demo and told me that they can find influences from Scandinavian Black Metal from the early 90s (Mayhem, Burzum). Still, if I had to choose two bands that I use as inspiration for SARTAEL's sound, these would be IRAE and Satanic Warmaster. The most primitive and intense sound and the rawest production are characteristics that I really appreciate. In terms of literary works, there is a book that I use as inspiration for certain songs, such as Adversary, which is Michael W. Ford's “The Bible of The Adversary”, also known as Black Funeral's Akhtya Nachttoter. In addition, I will seek inspiration from Mother Nature and medieval legends and myths.

What end do you want to achieve with Sartael and what are the plans for the future (brief and distant)?

SARTAEL will always be my project, and I will continue to work on it from now on. Demo 2020 was just the beginning and a small sample of what is coming. I can say that I have already started composing the next release, but it has no definite date nor can I say that it is coming soon, as there is nothing yet planned.
