VRK – “Palimpsesto Retrospectivo da Memória” (Nigra Mors)

One of the good things in life, is that we have the ability to connect to places like we connect to people. Having an enormous connection to the (real) North, made it easy for me to connect to neighbor Galicia. Beyond the geographic reality, the social parallelisms are ever present. The mountains, the old believes, the way we look at our own, and how we stand our ground when it comes to defending the land (not in a belligerent way, for course), helps to create these bridges. Music wise, and specifically in Extreme Metal, I have been following Xerión for a few years now. Always loved the way Nocturno incorporated his ancient Folk background in Black Metal, setting it apart from most of the Folk Black Metal acts. There is this… sweetness to his music, to his way of creating music.

A while ago I was gifted a few releases from Nigra Mors, by the man himself. It took me a while to have the time to really listen to it, but I really enjoyed the music. The one handled in this review is far from what I have heard from Nocturno and Daga (for Xerión is a 2-piece project) and sees Nocturno join forces with Analitika Sordida Pesilentia – on vocals – to craft a sound that has a more Finnish veins, than Galician. At first, once “O Eterno Desacougo” starts, I think of Beherit or Blasphemy… mostly for the atmosphere, and not specifically for the overall sound. Although Witchcraft, also from Finland, does come to mind as well.

Slow, slow, slow. And heavy as Hell. Slow paced drumming, accompanied by this thick guitar riffs, this heavy bass. The vocals, far from the instruments, works as sort of a guide, to the listener. From this point on, it was all power and violence. Sometimes, here and there, I get this scent of rotten, decrepit, Crust; which is not odd, given the nature of Black Metal – especially the harsher fringes.

The drums, this repeating pattern, monotonous and almost mechanical, I see they were programmed… makes sense (but correct me if needed), fits the music, fits the aesthetic, fits the genre. It gives the music that… I can’t quite describe it, to be honest. The same way Beherit has this aura, this atmosphere of putrid air and moldy souls, VRK conveys a variety of heavy elements, to structure their sound. It is Black Metal, it has chaos, it has this mechanical, almost industrial taste to it; and the more you spin it, the more you start to enjoy this controlled chaotic dysfunction. It sounds weird, I know, but trust me.

It might not sit with you at first, but it grows, it will cement itself onto your brain, echoing. And this is the magick of Music: it might not be – nor needs to be – the most complex in the World to make you feel, be it hate, be it love…
