“Hive of Resentment” (Streets of Hate, 2023)
Well, well, well. Glad to see these lads back in action, right? I remember how “Disenlightenment” hit hard when I first heard it! Was not expecting that from a Hardcore band, honestly, and lad, it is some great music. Less than a year after they are back. According to the band, this new EP features tunes that were written and semi-recorded at the same time as “Disenlightenment” and finished earlier this year.
The moment I first heard them I felt something as a bit off - for the best - and there was a lot more than “just” Hardcore in their music. Some of those riffs were clearly Heavy Metal, some were more Thrashy, but it was clear that the band had something more than just Hardcore, and this new EP shows it clearly, in my opinion. Curiously, I started the morning listening to one of the more recent Cradle of Filth albums (still trying to recover that old love for the band), and it is not that I heard Cradle’s music in this EP, but there are moments that could, with some work, fit in a Cradle tune. And I find that amazing, honestly!
Hardcore bands that go down the Metallic hole tend to fall into the more Thrashier side; Mourning has clear Black Metal moments, and “Rule Over Ashes” is, probably, the best example of such. The band has merged their Hardcore sound with a love for Black Metal and it came out perfect. Oh yes, Hardcore is clearly there, but it has gained strength and ferociousness, and I love it. And the keyboards? Oh yeah… wonderful. There is no doubt that these lads are Hardcore lads, but also fans of Heavy Metal. I just started checking a concert they gave in the US earlier this year with Drain, Foreign Hands, and Three Knee Deep, and the lead singer is sporting a Paradise Lost t-shirt, and if you check their Instagram, you will find a marvelous tribute to Quorthon and Bathory.
So, although the fusion of Heavy Metal and Hardcore is
not new, some musicians are so good they take genres beyond their limits.
Expecting more things from these mates. Blood, Fire, Death. Go!
