Mavorim
“In Omnia Paratus” (Purity Through Fire, 2024)
German Black Metal has always had that special aroma, a characteristic sound and appeal to it. There is a melody that feels German, feels warm and powerful, majestic and strong! This might sound odd, but I dare say the ones that appreciate this side of the German Black Metal scene will easily understand what I mean. And this has always been hard for me to put into words, a bit like the Eastern European Black Metal scene (Russia and Poland, mostly) and their special sound, the Germans have a thing to for it, and Mavorim is no exception, quite the opposite.
I was trying to remember when,
and where, I first hear Mavorim, but memory fails me, and I cannot recall such
information. Well, it does not matter. Let us enjoy what we have before us: the
band’s latest album, from 2024, and its magnificent force. Yes, that is one of
the words to better describe this album: Force. It has the Mavorim fingerprint,
with small, yet transforming, elements. The idea of a medieval atmosphere is
well present, and at times reminds me of Forefather, with the given
differences, of course.
Enthroning Nightfall
“Shadowland Mysteries” (Nithstang Productions, 2024)
It is wonderful, in this time and age, to be able to still be surprised by yet another Raw Black Metal project. For a while now, I have stayed away from the sub-genre, mostly because it all sounded the same, and the quality was quickly decreasing. Nonetheless, I found this the other looking through YouTube and was left in awe. The number of times I have had this on repeat is absurd! It is extremely easy to just go with it, in the sense that it is of “easy listening”, if that makes sense considering we are talking about Raw Black Metal.
This is the project’s first release, an 18-minute long powerful Black Metal record. One that needs to be praised, needs to be worshipped. Too much? It might be, but I have not heard such a superb release in a while. Its rawer side is there, but the melodic side is also there, and the balance is magnificent! The riffs are immensely addictive and refined. Frozen and melodic. I have no idea, but this is so well crafted it hurts.
“Key to the Cursed Realm” has this amazing riff, this beautiful riff! And this is the reason why this work must be taken in such consideration: the balance of emotions is tremendous. The harsh and aggressive, and the melodic and beautiful. The duality…
I have read that Sceadugenga
(Deogen, Åndutsyn, Geheimnisvoll, Glaistig, Grundhyrde, Inbrydling,
Kaleidoscope Autistic Blood, Köpfen, Waelwang, Wuldorgast) is behind it, and I
did read that he lends his vocal craftmanship to this set of songs, but fine by
me, please continue. All in all, listen to it. Period.
