Malakhim
“And in Our Hearts the Devil Sings” (Iron Bonehead Productions, 2025)

These last 2 years have seen a return, from this person, to the more melodic and better produced Black Metal releases. For so many years I have invested my time “crawling in the mud” of decrepit and mouldy Black Metal, to later return to the sound where I started. I started off with the bigger names of Black Metal in the 90ies, and the sound was not as dirty as it is today. Well, some was, but only due to the crap material musicians had access to. Today, you see musicians voluntarily “destroying” their sound for the sake of… Trve Kvltness.

Nonetheless, good quality sound Black Metal is still alive, and Malakhim is proof of that. Malakhim is not only proof that we can have good sounding Black Metal, but that also sounds terrifying and dark and cold and majestically devilish. Hopefully, all the adjectives make sense. “And in Our Hearts the Devil Sings” is the band’s 2nd album since their inception in 2016. Very few for so many years, I know, but trust me… top bloody notch quality. As I said in the beginning, I went back to this more melodic Black Metal sound, and I have rediscovered how good it is. Not that the rawer sound does not have melody, for it has; nonetheless, it is slightly different. Malakhim has this epic element in their music that makes it majestic and powerful without losing an inch of aggressiveness or darkness.

“Solar Crucifixion” is a superb example of the magnitude of the band’s sound. Comparisons with Watain are real, of course, but do not define what the band is. Creative guitar riffs, check. Melodic transitions, check. Majestic atmosphere, check. Well, it seems the band has all the needed elements to become much bigger! A thing that caught my ear was the fact that the sounds has no “dead spaces”, if that makes any sense. Allow me to remind you that I am not a musician, so explaining music, from theoretical point of view, is hard. “Dead spaces”, the way the instruments fit into each other, creates a single piece, a wall of sound that touches all corners of the room we are stuck in. probably every single musician that reads this, will laugh; I would laugh too, so…

But fear not! Aggressiveness is ever present, and the tidal waves of weight are set forth, decimating us all in our path. “Angel of the Bottomless Pit” is an epic tune. Very much aligned with what is the Swedish way of playing/writing Black Metal. All in all, a superb example of the band’s ability and unstoppable ravaging power…
