CUIR – “Single
Demo” (Offside Records 2020)
The French are well known for their exquisite ability
to Punk. I don’t know if it’s the language or the croissants, but they have
this special approach to the music, that makes them stand out from the rest.
Punk is not dead, at all. Punk is alive and kicking arse!
CUIR, distinguishes itself from the rest of the pack, due to its style and end result. It’s Punk, but it is also Synth and danceable tunes! I would never imagine myself enjoying this mate as much as I do. Imagine 70s Synth Pop, flashy lights and latex, add some Punk Rock to it, plus a badass attitude, and you got CUIR. It has groove and it delivers the beats that will, most definitely, make you shake your booty, baby!
This little piece of Art came out in February of the present year, and it blew the scene! 1 Demo and 1 Single, both out in 2019, opened way for the project’s first Full-length (c’mon, this thing is only 15 minutes and 6 seconds long) and it really leaves a mark.
SYNDROME 81 –
“Béton Nostalgie” (Offside Records, 2017)
Once again, the French delivered the goods. This is an
old release! Given the state of the World, yesterday’s big thing is today’s
old-fashioned act, so you know, 2017 sounds ancient. But hey, this is pure
gold, do not miss on it!
“Post Punk Oi” this has to be the best description I have ever read about this band. And I actually agree with it, 100%. This is Oi, stripped down Oi. Plain and simple. But it does not sound, entirely, like the forefathers of Oi, it has a touch of something else, something modern.
The discussed release gathers all the band’s tracks, from 2013 to 2017. I only heard of them in 2018, but quickly became an almost daily fixation. A bit like CUIR – and all the French bands I listen to – the language has a massive impact on me, as a listener. French language has this something that makes it so musical, and when it comes to Punk, especially this, the classic way of doing it, “The British Way”. May I dare say it? I will.
It appears that all Post Punk bands have a copy
of “Unknown Pleasures” by their beds ahahahah wait, that is not, in any way, a
negative thing. I am completely enthusiastic about Joy Division, so… but they
still add that more raw Punk element, making it one of the strongest French
Punk bands of the new generation. Joy Division and Negative Approach were
friends of Youth of Today and a lot of Boston HC bands from the Past, as well as the Oi! movement in the UK. It is all
quality. “Chaque Jour”, oh mon amour!
COUPE GORGE –
“Troubles” (Offside Records, 2018)
This was released in May, 2 years ago. Bloody
coincidence we are checking it now, right? This is classic Hardcore Punk. It
has groove, it has kick, it has power! Was this not sang in French, and it
would easily fit the North American Hardcore scene from the late 80s early 90s.
It is quite sped up and energetic. Unlike the previous gentlemen, these chaps are more North American than European, that is a fact. The Negative Approach vibe is quite strong in these, and that oozes with energy. That speed I just wrote about? It’s the US vibe ahahah but, at the same time, it still has that Oi melody, in the back, bouncing up and down, back and forth, staying strong! Guitar (short) solos, wow! Yes, it has that, and it fits the bloody music like a mothaf…
What more to say?! It has members of Syndrome 81 on its ranks, which is always a sign of quality, right?!
