Holy Figures
(New Morality Zine, 2023)
When
we think of Hardcore our mind goes straight to an image of controlled violence,
of sonic revolution, bodies moving, sweat, love, strength, and this sort of
anger, this release of energy. And the good thing about music is that this
scenario does not need to have a “violent soundtrack”. The whole Emo scene,
before it became what became - dropping some tears for what ended up being the
Emo Scene - was a full on emotional trainwreck with amazing music. The “boys do
not cry” bullshit is all that is wrong with this World, but forget about it.
The Emotional Hardcore thing, and the Post-Hardcore thing, both were centered
(and still are, of course) on emotions and feelings and releasing the weight
that is pushing us down, and Hardcore is a mix of that: violence, emotion,
release. And Holy Figure comes into the picture, and holy fuck…
Just like most of the music I stumble upon, Holy Figures popped up on my YouTube playlist, and the moment it started, Deftones came to mind. Well, not as twisted and schizophrenic as the Sacramento quintet, but very much their sound. I have loved the Deftones for many, many years, and seeing them become more and more a very unique thing makes me happy, as a fan. Holy Figures is a quartet from North Carolina that has a special ability to write music that pierces your heart and gives you strength you did not know you had. If this had been shown to me when I was a little stupid teenager, this would become the soundtrack of a lifetime. I can also hear Quicksand in here, which makes sense if you have the Deftones…
Some voices simply radiate honesty and feeling. We all know the voice works as an instrument, but some voices do not have feeling, do not have that special something. These vocals are just impressive and fit like a glove with the instrumental side of the band’s music. It is amazing how the music grabbed me by the throat, threw me around, and made me very happy in the end. This does not call for a mosh pit, but a moment of introspection and peace. Really peaceful. Superb, mates.
