Profanação

“Negras Noites nas Catacumbas do Degredo” (Altare, 2023)

The Portuguese Black Metal scene is mostly famous for its Raw Black Metal fringe. From Mons Veneris to Black Cilice, and a million more bands in between, we have gradually built a name for ourselves in all things Black Metal. In all honesty, people started noticing our scene a bit more when the above-mentioned names started spreading the disease beyond the physical boundaries of our country, and although I am not complaining… late they have arrived at the party, for we have been doing this for years and years. And what has been released this year – these past few months, at least – in Portugal, Black Metal related. Well, let’s find out.

2023 has been, in my opinion, a good year for Black Metal. The Portuguese scene released a few records, and I am still going through most of them. Please check Angrenost’s return. Back to this review. The rawer side of our Black Metal scene has, in my opinion, a particular sound. Not that bands copy each other, or simply replicate each other’s sound, but we do get this very aligned sonic identity: Voemmr, Negrume, Mons Veneris… Profanação. Not that they sound the same, but the atmospheres, the feeling one gets from these entities, is very similar.

And with that we reach the main topic for today’s article/review/exposition/whatever: Profanação is part of the collective/label that goes by the name Concílio M.D.M., and this is their 3rd release, 1st full-length. Profanação hails from Porto, a city I associate with Black Metal mostly due to its atmosphere and constant Autumnal skies, along with their grey that covers its older – and sometimes new – buildings and overall city. Love Porto. “Negras…” is, although I dare say it is not, a discrete homage to acts like Mons Veneris and alike, with that raw sound, that necrotic and moldy atmosphere. I did mention Negrume, and Negrume is a great example of the sound these lads are aiming at, and they nailed it. Their previous works did not captivate me that much, but the small details they have applied to this one does make the difference. The delicate, and at first unexpected, keyboard interludes that set the mood and welcome the next act of devastation. “Negras Noites nas Catacumbas do Degredo”, the track, is immensely satisfying, and if one pays close attention to the soft melody, one will feel its hypnotizing power.
