Cold Gawd – “I'll Drown on This Earth” (Dais Records, 2024)

I was minding my business, checking YouTube channels I follow, in search of hew stuff to hear, and I liked the cover on Cold Gawd’s 2nd release. No idea who they were, no idea how their music sounded, just pressed PLAY. Well, I was already expecting a sort of modern approach to Hardcore but was not guessing this at all.

I feel that the Hardcore scene has absorbed the Deftones quite a lot in the last few years. Ok, they did not reinvent the wheel, but they have shaped their sound in a way that more and more identify with. I do not mean “Adrenaline” or “Around the Fur”, but after, after, after “White Pony”. But hey, Cold Dawg does not live at the expenses of the Deftones’, no! At times I even have this Alcest feeling, but then I remember that these lads play a sort of Shoe-Post-Hardcore Fusion, or something like that.

Is this an impactful release? A powerful one? Aggressive and harsh? No. Their sound is this eerie something, and I remember having the same feeling in some of Jesu’s tracks; this almost peaceful and enchanting sound. Oddly, this starts off with a bang, but it tends to slow down, thicken the atmosphere, and become more relaxed and softer. Is it peculiar? Yes, it is. Is it bad? No, not at all. “Nudism” is something really cool, for example. It resembles the soundtrack of a dreamy day, the warmth of a Summer sun, the soft embrace of a loved one. Ok, I lost all the Hardcore thing in me right now.

But nonetheless, Hardcore is Love, and Hardcore is change, and these lads, Hardcore or not, have slapped me right in the feels, no questions asked, and forced us to see what was always in front of us…: freedom. A sound that needs to be closely analysed to understand it.
