Pagan Warlord
“Barbaric Balladry” (Final Agony Records, 2025)

Pagan Warlord unleash "Barbaric Balladry", a 2025 full-length steeped in pagan Black Metal fury. Swedish barbarism, 90s spirit and warlike hymns.

Pagan Black Metal is one of the best, in my opinion, subgenres of Black Metal. Very few can emanate such powerful sonic energy and emotion. It might sound weird, but one can almost feel it, it is a sort of power that fuels one’s fire and ancient medieval warrior. Yes, because in the end we are all descendants of barbarians and similar tribes… A very poor argument, I am aware; but bear with me, please.

Although it might sound foolish, Pagan Black Metal, like any other musical genre, has the ability to make you feel things, so I believe we are aligned with such thought. Pagan Warlord is not an unknown name, so it was with satisfaction that I discovered, via Rites of Pestilence, that these Swedes had put out another piece of Barbarian Black Metal. If you like Graveland and Friends, you will surely appreciate what these two unknown musicians are crafting, as it very similar to what Rob did in a recent past.

Anyhow, “Barbaric Balladry” is the band’s first full-length release, and it did not disappoint. Powerful, full of heart and energy, an homage to the glory days of the 90ies and the turmoil that surrounded Black Metal. Production wise, it sounds very good, not polished enough, not dirty enough that it does not sound listenable. Short melodic moments where the synthetiser is more present and provides the composition a majestic presence.

What more can be said about it? Hymns to the time that felt dangerous and majestic, powerful riffs that freeze the strongest of hearts and ravishes the weakest of souls. Ride into the cold lands of the North.
