Utopia Platafórmica Fanzine - Volume II - Punk Oi! Hardcore

2.º volume da Fanzine, desta feita dedicada ao Punk Oi! Hardcore. Estrutura similar: 5 bandas / artistas, mas mais de 5 perguntas desta vez! 

Começamos com a banda que editou um dos melhores trabalhos, na minha opinião, da cena Punk Hardcore Mundial, e quiçá europeia eheheh PRESSURE PACT, Holanda... punch in da face, bitches!

Naturais de Tilburg, Holanda, Pressure Pact editaram ano passado (2019) um dos maiores petardos que tive oportunidade de ouvir! "Scared Off The Streets" é um conjunto de temas que incentiva à violência… controlada e não prejudicial para a saúde humana, claro! Discurso directo, meninos e meninas… PRESSURE PACT!

Em primeiro lugar, bem-vindos. Espero que tudo esteja a correr bem, tendo em conta o panorama mundial actual.

Obrigado pela oportunidade! Tudo está a correr bem connosco actualmente. As coisas podem, sempre, piorar.

Teremos que começar, obviamente, pelo início. Digam-me quando começou esta aventura, como começou, descrevam-me todo o caminho percorrido até hoje.

Tudo começou com a ideia "Hey, não há uma banda, na Holanda, a fazer o que o Reino Unido tem feito nos últimos anos, e temos que colocar a Holanda no mapa. Quereis começar uma banda?". As bandas do Reino Unido a que nos referimos especificamente são as (então) bandas mais recentes da NWOBHC como Violent Reaction, The Flex e Arms Race.

O vosso som é uma combinação de imensas linhas musicais: Punk, Hardcore, D-Beat... tudo isto resulta num acto de violência controlada, como poucos. De onde vem a inspiração para esta "Besta"?

Nesta banda, cada membro é "especialista" e acérrimo fã de um género. Quer sejam os clássicos D-Beat, as bandas Revolution Summer, o S.H.I.T. e o estilo Blazing Eye (The Cosmosians, The Breed), ou Fastcore Jumpy (Raylin, Azijnpisser). Isto é basicamente o que lançamos para o liquidificador e acabamos com Pressure Pact!

Consigo ouvir alguns elementos britânicos, talvez? É uma realidade musical à qual recorreis quando criais?

Considero que o nosso som acaba por ser um pouco de Old-school Boston, a sonoridade britânica, Old-school Nova Iorque e Detroit, quando se trata de olhar para trás e ver como queremos soar em termos de música e atitude.

De onde vem a inspiração para o lado lírico da vossa música?

O Lennard e eu, essencialmente, somos aqueles que escrevemos as letras. O Lennard tende a ter, mais frequentemente, uma visão mais fictícia das letras, onde pega numa referência cultural como um filme ou artista de culto e, às vezes, relaciona-as com eventos sociopolíticos actuais, mas um pouco à semelhança de Discharge, cria uma imagem na cabeça como na música "Gestapo". Ele teve a inspiração para essas letras aquando de uma excursão escolar às antigas prisões alemãs da Segunda Guerra Mundial, em Berlim. Acredito que a linha ‘’Não posso acreditar que nos apanharam a todos’’, foi literalmente cravada nas paredes de uma das celas da prisão. As minhas letras são apenas letras vindas das minhas próprias visões e experiências. Por exemplo, "No For An Answer" e "Pressure Pact" são canções sobre tomar uma posição e unificar-se contra colegas, chefes, etc. (estilo Negative FX). Considerando que a maioria das minhas outras letras é sobre estar "lixado" com o Mundo, e especialmente com as pessoas que apenas "me moem as engrenagens". Humilhação social, bêbados machistas, comportamento nas redes sociais e o preconceito.

Como é a cena Punk Hardcore holandesa? Como é a cena de Tilburg?

A cena Punk Hardcore holandesa é amplamente subestimada ou simplesmente desconhecida para a maioria das pessoas do outro lado da fronteira. Existem muitas bandas neste pequeno país e cada cidade grande tem as suas próprias bandas e cena. No entanto, as bandas não se limitam a esta geografia. Como a Holanda é tão pequena, fazemos shows juntos, principalmente nas grandes cidades. Há Bruja Kru em Roterdão, Humanimaal em Tilburg, Barnyard Boogie em Eindhoven, muitos punks em Amesterdão e muitos garotos Hardcore em Leeuwarden. E não te esqueças dos belgas! A Bélgica está a meia hora de distância. Muita "polinização cruzada" ocorre entre essas cenas, e novas bandas interessantes surgem a partir desta. Somos todos muito inspirados pela quantidade de estilos totalmente diferentes dentro da cena Hardcore holandesa. As bandas de Powerviolence costumam tocar com bandas de Garage Punk, o que é perfeito se estiveres sedento por uma mudança de público e influências musicais. Novas pessoas na multidão, as bandas agarram a música e isso cria uma forte ligação entre as cenas e os estilos. A cena de Tilburg, hoje em dia, ainda "vive" muito dos resquícios do antigo Eurocore e Oi!, mas felizmente (ha!) existe um grande movimento em torno de Humanimaal. Existem (eu acho) mais de 5 bandas que compartilham a maioria dos mesmos membros. As pessoas quando se referem à cena de Tilburg e à cena de Noord-Brabant, em geral, pintam como que uma "confusão incesta".

Depois de duas Demos, o álbum chegou, e que álbum! “Scared off the Streets” foi uma das obras mais marcantes que tive a oportunidade de ouvir em 2019, no que ao Punk Hardcore diz respeito. De onde vem toda essa raiva? É direccionado para o quê e para quem?

Obrigado pelas palavras amáveis! Considero que uma das respostas dadas anteriormente pode facilmente ser a resposta para esta.

Que planos há para o futuro? Suponho que esta pandemia tenha atrasado / alterado projectos…

Definitivamente. Deveríamos fazer um fim-de-semana no Reino Unido junto com amigos nossos – Raylin – um concerto na Grécia, tocar com lendas como DYS e Adrenalin OD, um monte de outros concertos loucos e, por último, íamos para o Japão por duas semanas. De momento, estamos a trabalhar em várias músicas inéditas para um Split com uma das nossas bandas favoritas da nova geração, dos EUA.

First of all, welcome. I hope everything is going well in view of the current world panorama.

Thanks for having this Q&A type of thing with us! Everything is going well for us these days. Things could, even nowadays, always get worse.

We will have to start, obviously, at the beginning. Tell me when this adventure started, how it started ... describe to me the whole path that has been walked until today.

The whole band started with the idea of ‘’Hey, there’s no band in the Netherlands yet doing what the U.K. has been doing the past years and we gotta put the Netherlands on the map. Want to start a band?’’ Those U.K. bands we specifically referenced were the (then) more recent NWOBHC bands like Violent Reaction, The Flex and Arms Race.

Your sound is a combination of immense musical lines: Punk, Hardcore, D-Beat ... this all results in an act of controlled violence like few others. Where does the inspiration for this "Beast" come from?

In our band, every member goes the hardest on one specific type of subgenre. Whether that be the d-beat classics, Revolution Summer bands, the grimier S.H.I.T. and Blazing Eye style (The Cosmosians , The Breed), or jumpy fastcore (Raylin, Azijnpisser). That’s pretty much what we throw in the blender and we end up with Pressure Pact as it is.

Can I hear British elements, perhaps? Is it a musical reality that you resort to when creating?

I could say we mostly throw old Boston, British, old New York and Detroit in the mix when it comes to looking back on what we want to sound like music wise and attitude wise.

Where does the lyrical side of your music come from? Where do you go to get inspiration for what you are going through with your music?

Lennard and I mostly write or have written the lyrics. Lennard tends to more often have a more fictional take on lyrics where he takes a cultural reference like a movie or cult artist and sometimes makes it relate to current sociopolitical events, but also just Discharge-like creates a picture in your head like on the song Gestapo. He got the inpiration for those lyrics when he went on a schooltrip to old German World War Two prisons in Berlin. I believe the line ‘’I can’t believe they got us all’’ was literally scratched in one ofthea prison cell’s walls.

My lyrics are solely lyrics coming from my own views and experiences that occurred. For example, No For An Answer and Pressure Pact are songs about taking a stand and unifying against peers, bosses, etcetera (Negative FX style) and stepping up. Whereas most of my other lyrics are about being mad at the world and especially people that just grind my gears. Social leaches, macho-drunks, social media behavior, and being upset with people that try to make bigotred smalltalk.

How is the Dutch Hardcore Punk scene? How is the Tilburg scene?

The Dutch hardcore punk scene is vastly underrated or just unknown to most people across the border. There are many bands for this small of a country and every big city has their own bands and scene. However, bands aren’t limited to this geography. Since the Netherlands is so small, we mostly play shows together in the big cities. There’s Bruja Kru in Rotterdam, Humanimaal in Tilburg, Barnyard Boogie in Eindhoven, lots of punks in Amsterdam and lots of hardcore kids in Leeuwarden. And don’t forget the Belgians! Belgium is only like half an hour drive  for us. Alot of cross-pollination takes place between these scenes, and new interesting bands rise from it.  We are all very inspired by the amount of totally different styles within the Dutch hardcore scene. Powerviolence bands often share bills with garage-punk bands, which is perfect if you are thirsty for a change of audience and musical influences. New people in the crowds or bands pick up on the music and it creates a strong tie between the scenes and styles.

The Tilburg scene nowadays is still a lot of the remnants of the older Eurocore and Oi! Bands, but luckily (ha!) there is this huge movement revolving around Humanimaal. There are (I thnk) over 5 bands that would share most of the same members. People refer to the Tilburg scene, and Noord-Brabant scene in general, as an ‘’incestal mess’’.

After two Demos, the Album arrived, and what an album! "Scared off the Streets" was one of the most powerful works I had the opportunity to hear in 2019, as far as Hardcore Punk is concerned. Where does all this anger come from? Is directed to what and to whom?

Thanks for the kind words! I think one of the previous questions would be fitting to this question as well.

What plans do you have for the future? I suppose this pandemic has delayed / changed projects.

Definitely. We were supposed to do a U.K. weekender together with our buddies in Raylin, a show in Greece, play with legends like DYS and Adrenalin OD, a bunch of other insane shows, and lastly we were going to Japan for two weeks.  Right now we are working on several brand new songs for a split with one of our favorite newer bands from the USA that we shared a bill with.
